Smedley Butler was the most active soldier during the Banana War era, 1900-1930.  A gifted leader, Smedley was extremely popular with soldiers and veterans and equally unpopular with politicians and military brass, particularly after he retired when he became an outspoken critic of US foreign policy.  Smedley won two Medals of Honor (one of which he protested the award) and served in nearly every Banana War era conflict from Haiti to Mexico and Central America to China.  In 1934 Smedley disclosed a plot by big business executives to remove FDR from office.
